바수키(산스크리트어: वासुकि, 영어: Vasuki)는 힌두교의 나가라자이다. 그는 머리에 나가마니(뱀의 장식)라는 보석을 가지고 있는 것으로 묘사된다. 다른 나가의 왕이자 비슈누가 쉬는 침대인 셰샤는 그의 형이며, 다른 나가인 마나사는 그의 누이이다.

Origin & Background

Vasuki (바사키) is known as the king of the nagas in Hinduism, with his father being the sage Kashyapa (카샤파) and his mother being Kadru (카드루). He has a brother, Shesha (셰샤), who is another king of the nagas, and a sister named Manasa (마나사).

The Legend

Vasuki plays a significant role in the legend of 'Samudra Manthana' (삼드라 만타나). He is depicted as being tied by the gods and asuras to Mount Mandara to allow them to extract amrita from the ocean of milk. According to the Mahabharata, Vasuki was cursed by Kadru and was burned at the snake sacrifice of King Janamejaya (자나메자야) as a result of refusing to assist her plans. He sought refuge with the gods and participated in the churning of the ocean. Vasuki retreated to the underworld but sought advice to save his brothers. It is said that one of his brothers, Elapatra (엘라파트라), overheard Brahma saying that a sage with the same name as their sister Jaratkaru (자라트카루) would marry and have a son who would be their savior. Vasuki prepared for his sister to marry that sage, and the son born from them, Astika (아스티카), was able to successfully end the persecution of Janamejaya's nagas.

Variants

Vasuki is known as one of the 'Eight Great Dragon Kings' (팔대 용왕, Bādà lóngwáng; Hachidai Ryūō) in Chinese and Japanese mythology. Among them are Nanda (난다), Upananda (우파난다), Sāgara (사가라), Takshaka (타크샤카), Balavan (발라반), Anavatapta (아나바타프타), and Utpala (우트팔라).

In Popular Culture

In Buddhism, Vasuki and other naga kings appear as an audience listening to the Buddha's teachings. The duties of the naga kings include leading the nagas to protect and worship the Buddha, as well as protecting other enlightened beings. Vasuki's naga priest is Tatig Naga (타티그 나가).
