The Legend

Takshaka is a being mentioned as Nagaraja in Hinduism and Buddhism. He appears in the Hindu epics Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana, and is depicted as the king of the nagas. Takshaka has a friendship with Indra and once resided in Kurukshetra and the Khandava forest (present-day Delhi). He lived with Ashvasena, and his brother Srutasena resided in a sacred place called Mahadyumna. Takshaka is a descendant of the Ikshvaku dynasty, and his son Brihadbala was killed in battle by Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna.
