Description
머리 여덟, 꼬리 여덟의 거대한 뱀. 매년 소녀 한 명을 제물로 요구했다. 스사노오가 술에 취하게 한 뒤 참수하여 퇴치했으며, 꼬리에서 천총운검(아메노무라쿠모노츠루기)이 나왔다.
The Legend
Yamata no Orochi is a legendary serpent with eight heads and eight tails that appears in Japanese mythology. According to the 'Kojiki' and 'Nihon Shoki', the god Susanoo defeated this serpent to save Kushinadahime, and during the process, he discovered the Kusanagi no Tsurugi, one of Japan's imperial treasures, in the serpent's tail.
In Popular Culture
According to local tradition, Yamata no Orochi survived the battle with Susanoo and fled to Mount Ibuki, where it was worshipped as Ibuki Daimyōjin. Additionally, Emperor Antoku and Longnu were also considered incarnations of Yamata no Orochi.
