The Legend
Haetae (해태) is a legendary being passed down in Korea, described as having a muscular lion-like body covered with sharp scales, a bell around its neck, and a horn on its forehead. Haetae is believed to inhabit the border regions of Manchuria and is considered a protector against fire disasters. During the Joseon Dynasty, Haetae was believed to be a guardian deity that prevented fire calamities, and sculptures of Haetae were used in architectural structures such as Gyeongbokgung Palace. In modern times, the cartoon character Haechi, the city mascot of Seoul, is inspired by Haetae.
