Description
Magical worm created from a dead man's rib bone, wrapped in wool and nursed on the witch's blood. Crawls into neighbors' farms to steal milk by sucking cows dry. Vomits the stolen milk into its maker's churn
Origin & Background
Tilberi is a being derived from Icelandic folklore, created by witches to steal milk. This creature can only be made and owned by women. Tilberi and Snakur are regional variations, used in eastern Iceland, while in the north it is called 'Tilberi' and in the south and west it is referred to as 'Snakur'. There are no literary mentions of this creature before the 17th century, but one 17th-century writer noted that a witch who owned a Tilberi was punished in 1500.
The Legend
To create a Tilberi, a woman must steal a rib from a recently buried corpse on the first Sunday of Easter, wrap it in stolen gray wool, and place it between her breasts. Then, for three consecutive Sundays, she must spit out the wine received during the Eucharist, and the Tilberi will gradually come to life. The Tilberi can be sent to suck milk from other people's cows and sheep, and it will return to her dairy storage window, shouting 'I'm full, mom!' or 'Open the butter lid, mom!' and vomit the stolen milk into the butter churn. The Tilberi may also steal wool to create a giant moving ball.
