Nuckelavee is a demon from Orcadian legend that resembles a horse, combining elements of both horse and human. At first glance, it appears to be a typical silhouette of a rider, but upon closer inspection, it has a form where the head, torso, and arms of a fleshless human grow from the back of a fleshless horse. British folklorist Catherine Briggs described the Nuckelavee as 'the most terrible creature' among all demons of the Northern Isles of Scotland. The breath of the Nuckelavee withers crops and sickens livestock, and while it primarily lives in the sea, it was considered a cause of drought and plague on land. This creature cannot endure fresh water, and therefore, those being pursued can escape it by crossing a river or stream. In the summer, it is said to be confined by the ancient spirit of Orcadian mythology known as 'Mither o' the Sea.'
