The Legend
Each-uisge is a supernatural water spirit found in the Scottish Highlands, meaning 'water horse.' According to legend, Each-uisge is described as 'the fiercest and most dangerous of all water horses.' This creature usually takes the form of a horse and is similar to a kelpie but much more brutal. Each-uisge inhabits the sea, sea lochs, and freshwater lochs, and has the ability to change its shape. It can transform into a beautiful horse, pony, handsome man, or giant bird. When in horse form, a man can only be safe while riding it if Each-uisge is on land. If it catches a whiff of water or sees even a drop of water, its skin becomes adhesive and immediately drags the victim to the deepest loch. After the victim drowns, Each-uisge tears them apart and swallows all of the body except for the liver.
Variants
The Irish aughisky or Irish water horse is similar to the Scottish version in several ways. It sometimes comes out of the water and gallops on land, and if one can catch and tame an aughisky despite the danger, it becomes the best horse as long as it does not see the sea. The Isle of Man's cabyll-ushtey is greedy like Each-uisge, but there are not many stories about it. In one tale, cabyll-ushtey comes out of the Awin Dhoo (Black River) and eats a farmer's cattle, then takes his teenage daughter.
