The Legend
In Norse mythology, Surtr is known as a jotun, the greatest of the fire giants. He serves as the guardian of Muspelheim and plays a major role during the events of Ragnarok. Surtr wields a flaming sword and is prophesied to cover the entire earth with his flames in battle against the Aesir, particularly in his duel with the god Freyr. He guards the borders of Muspel and it is said that during Ragnarok, he will lead the 'Sons of Muspel' into battle and defeat Freyr.
In Popular Culture
The concept of Surtr as a fire giant continues in modern Iceland. The volcanic island Surtsey, which emerged in 1963 in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago of Iceland, is named after Surtr. Additionally, Surtr was adapted as a character by Marvel Comics, first appearing in Journey into Mystery #97 (October 1963), and officially appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film Thor: Ragnarok in 2017.
