Origin & Background
Dangun is the legendary founder and first king of Gojoseon, said to have established Gojoseon in 2333 BC. The legend of Dangun appears in the 13th-century 'Samguk Yusa' as the oldest record, which cites Korea's lost historical records known as 'Gogi' and China's 'Weishi'.
The Legend
In Korean mythology, the legend of Dangun's ancestry begins with his grandfather Hwanin. Hwanin is known as 'the Lord of Heaven', and his son Hwanung wished to live in the human world. Hwanin allowed Hwanung and 3,000 followers to descend to Taebaeksan, where Hwanung established a city of gods, enacted laws and morals, and taught humans various skills, medicine, and agriculture. Dangun is said to have been born through the story of a bear and a tiger praying to become human, with the bear transforming into a woman and becoming Dangun's mother.
In Popular Culture
Dangun is commemorated in Korea on October 3rd, known as Gaecheonjeol, a national holiday celebrating the founding of Gojoseon. It began as a religious holiday honoring Dangun in accordance with the faith of the Daejonggyo. Additionally, in Taekwondo, Dangun appears as the second poomsae named 'Dangun', representing him as Korea's sacred legendary founder in 2333.
