The Legend

Nidhogg is known in Norse mythology as a Germanic dragon that gnaws at the roots of the World Tree Yggdrasil. He is associated with the dead in Hel and Niflheim. Nidhogg gnaws at one of the three roots of Yggdrasil, which is located above Niflheim. Additionally, according to the 'Gylfaginning' section of Snorri Sturluson's 'Prose Edda', a squirrel named Ratatoskr runs up and down Yggdrasil, delivering jealous words between Nidhogg and an eagle atop the tree.

In Popular Culture

Nidhogg appears multiple times in modern popular culture. In the Japanese light novel series 'High School DxD', he is depicted as the 'Abyss Rage Dragon' and described as a legendary 'evil dragon' from Norse mythology. In the video game 'World of Warcraft: Legion', his name is used for a world boss that appears in the Nordic-themed Stormheim area. Nidhogg also appears in 'Fire Emblem Heroes' and the Japanese manga 'One Piece'.
