Nøkken is a water spirit of human form that originates from German mythology and folklore, often known to possess the ability to shapeshift. It is particularly well-known in Scandinavian folklore and is often depicted in male form. Nøkken is said to play enchanting music to lure women and children into lakes or streams. However, not all Nøkken are malevolent beings; in some stories, they are harmless or even fall in love with humans. Nøkken is said to become melancholic without free contact with the source of water.

Nøkken also appears in modern popular culture. In the 2015 video game 'Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege', a Danish operative named Nøkk appears, using equipment that allows her to disappear from the camera to approach enemies.
