Origin & Background

Fenrir is a monstrous wolf that plays an important role in Norse mythology. He is the child of Loki and the female Jötunn Angerboda, born alongside Hel and Jörmungandr. Fenrir is mentioned in the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, as well as in Heimskringla, which were compiled in the 13th century.

The Legend

Fenrir plays a crucial role in the events of Ragnarök, prophesied to bring about the collapse of humanity and society and to kill the god Odin. He is the child of Loki, alongside Hel and Jörmungandr, and it is foretold in the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda that he will kill Odin. Fenrir is also referred to as the father of his children Sköll and Hati.

In Popular Culture

Fenrir also appears in modern literature, featured in Adam Gottlob Oehlenschläger's poem 'Om Fenrisulven og Tyr' and K. H. Strobl's novel 'Der Fenriswolf'. Additionally, he appears in the 2022 game 'God of War Ragnarök'.
