Description

A sea creature from the folklore of Norway. Hafgufa (Old Norse: haf "sea" + Old Norse: gufa "steam"; "sea-reek"; "sea-steamer") is a sea…

The Legend

Hafgufa is a marine creature whose name is a combination of the Old Norse word 'haf', meaning 'sea', and 'gufa', meaning 'steam', thus translating to 'steam of the sea' or 'sea's steam'. This creature is said to inhabit the waters of Iceland and the direction of Helluland. Hafgufa was considered a sea monster, but research suggests that this tale may have originated from the special feeding technique of whales known as 'trap feeding'. Hafgufa is mentioned in the 13th-century Norwegian text 'Konungs skuggsjá' (The King's Mirror), and later appears in 'Örvar-Odds saga' (The Saga of Örvar-Oddr) as a similar yet distinct creature from lyngbakr. Hafgufa is said to use bait similar to its own vomit to gather food, and in 'Fornaldarsaga' (The Saga of Ancient Times), it is known to consume whales, ships, and even people.

In Popular Culture

In the 2022 video game 'God of War Ragnarök', Hafgufa is depicted as a gigantic flying jellyfish, floating in the desert skies of Alfheim and possessing the ability to control sandstorms with whale-like songs.
