The Legend

The Lake Tianchi Monster is the name of a lake monster said to live in Lake Tianchi (Cheonji) located at the peak of Baekdu Mountain. Approximately 20 sightings of this monster have been reported, with some skeptical opinions suggesting it is merely an 'imaginary being' or 'floating volcanic rock.' The first sighting was reported in 1903, where a large creature resembling a water buffalo allegedly attacked three people but retreated into the water after being shot. Between August 21 and 23, 1962, a person using a telescope reportedly witnessed two monsters chasing each other underwater. Recent reports describe this monster as having a 1.5-meter-long neck with a human head attached, a white ring on the lower part of the neck, while the rest of its skin is gray and smooth.

In Popular Culture

In popular culture, the song 'Tianchi Lake' from the 2008 album 'Heretic Pride' by Mountain Goats addresses this monster. The lyrics include the lines 'floating on the surface, backstroking, with moonlight on its face, the Tianchi monster.'
