The Legend

In Germanic legends, dragons are often depicted as large serpents and are said to be creatures that hoard gold. Particularly in later stories, they share many commonalities with other dragons from European mythology and are sometimes described as winged dragons. Famous dragons in medieval German literature include the dragon that appears in 'Beowulf', the central dragon of the 'Völsunga' saga, Fafnir, and Jörmungandr, the great serpent of the world. All of these are associated with tales of treasure.
