The Legend
In Norse mythology, Garmr (Garm) is a wolf or dog associated with Hel and Ragnarok, depicted as a blood-stained guardian who guards the gates of Hel. Garmr is bound at the gates of Hel and will fight Týr during Ragnarok. The howl of Garmr serves as a herald of the coming of Ragnarok, which is mentioned in a refrain of 'Völuspá'. Garmr is often considered the hound of hell and is compared to the dog Cerberus from Greek mythology.
In Popular Culture
Garmr appears as the name and symbol of the protagonist's squad, Galm Team, in the combat flight simulation game 'Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War'. Additionally, Garmr appears as a boss character in the 2003 video game 'Boktai: The Sun Is in Your Hand', the 2017 game 'Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice', and the 2022 game 'God of War Ragnarök'. In episode 12 of the anime 'The Most Notorious "Talker" Runs the World's Greatest Clan', there is a scene where a new group, Wild Tempest, fights Garmr, who is depicted as intelligent and capable of speech, with three tails, three pairs of eyes, and an open chest. In the 2026 video game 'Resident Evil: Requiem', giant mutated zombie dogs chasing Leon S. Kennedy are referred to as Garmr, appearing as a new variant of the Cerberus zombie dogs from previous titles.
