Origin & Background
Bulgasari began production on November 26, 1961, and was inspired by a legendary Korean monster. This film was heavily influenced by the 1954 monster movie 'Godzilla'.
The Legend
Bulgasari is said to be a monster that is a manifestation of the martial artist Nam Hyeong, who was killed by traitors during the late Goryeo Dynasty and resurrected by hatred to seek revenge.
In Popular Culture
Bulgasari was released in South Korea on December 1, 1962, and is considered an important work in the history of Korean cinema. This film was the first in Korea to use special effects, and in 1985, director Shin Sang-ok produced a remake in North Korea.
