The Legend

Fáfnir is a dwarf or other type of humanoid being that appears in Germanic hero legends and folklore, who transformed into the form of a German dragon to guard treasure. He is typically slain by Sigurd, a member of the Völsung family. In Norse mythology, he is the son of Hreidmar and the brother of Regin and Otter. Fáfnir appears throughout the Völsung cycle, and after killing his father due to greed and seizing the ring and treasure of the dwarf Andvari, he transforms into a dragon. His brother Regin later helps Sigurd to kill Fáfnir.

In Popular Culture

Fáfnir has also influenced modern culture, inspiring the characters of Smaug and Gollum in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Additionally, he appears as 'Fafner' in Richard Wagner's opera 'Der Ring des Nibelungen', where he is depicted as a character who starts as a giant and transforms into a dragon. Fáfnir also appears in the video game 'God of War' and the manga series 'Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid', being reinterpreted in various modern media.
