Origin & Background

Samgong Bonpuri (삼공본풀이) is a Korean shamanic narrative passed down in the southern part of Jeju Island, related to the goddess Samgong. It is one of the most important stories among the 12 general bonpuri that all Jeju shamans know.

The Legend

This myth revolves around a girl named Gamejangagi (게임장아기), the third and youngest daughter of two beggars. After her birth, her parents become wealthy, but one day they ask their daughters the reason for their fortune. Gamejangagi claims it is thanks to the spirit 'Linia Nigra' that connects her navel and genitals, and she is expelled from the house. To punish her sisters, she transforms them into centipedes and mushrooms. Subsequently, her parents go blind and lose all their wealth, becoming beggars again. Gamejangagi joins a poor yam collector's family and marries their kind youngest son. The next day, she discovers that her husband's yam field is filled with gold and silver. Now wealthy again, Gamejangagi holds a feast for the beggars, and her parents unknowingly attend. After the feast, Gamejangagi reveals her identity and restores her parents' sight. Gamejangagi is worshipped as the goddess Samgong, who governs human fate.

Variants

As of 2018, there are 13 known variants of Samgong Bonpuri that have been documented by researchers, transcribed from the 1930s to the 2010s. All versions of the story are similar. For example, one version includes a scene where Gamejangagi throws dust to induce her parents' blindness.

In Popular Culture

Samgong Bonpuri plays an important role in Daegut (대굿), a ritual for worshipping deities in Jeju Island. This narrative is one of the 12 general bonpuri known by all Jeju shamans and is recited as part of one of the most sacred ritual sequences in Jeju religion.
