The Legend

The legend of Sin-ui is a Korean oral myth that tells the story of Sin-ui's attempt to deceive death. Sin-ui was born on Geumo Mountain, located in Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, which is known as the hometown of the Pyeongsan Shin clan. After growing up to be an excellent boy, he became a great general. He desperately wished to deceive death. One day, a grim reaper came to Sin-ui's house, but he could not enter because he was blocked by an orange tree that Sin-ui had planted. However, Sin-ui later discovered a malevolent plant, a peach tree, and used it to bring the grim reaper into his home. When the grim reaper faced Sin-ui, he saw that Sin-ui had a silver pin stuck in his hair. Silver has the power to drive away evil spirits, but the grim reaper was hiding under the floor of the house. When Sin-ui went to wash his face, the grim reaper jumped out and harvested him with a steel hammer. Sin-ui wished not to be buried for a week, but eventually, after escaping from the underworld, his family buried him in the ground. Buried underground, Sin-ui suffocated and died again.

In Popular Culture

This myth was originally passed down orally in Chilgok-gun and was recorded in a journal about the historical site of Geumo Mountain at Andong University in 1994.
