Description
한국 설화에 등장하는 Deity. The Igong Bonpuri (Korean: 이공 본풀이), better known in Korea as the Hallakgungi myth (Korean: 할락궁이 신화)
The Legend
Igong Bonpuri (이공 본풀이) is a myth transmitted from Jeju Island, where a being called Hallakgung (할락궁) appears as a deity protecting the mythical realm known as Seocheon Flower Field (서천 꽃밭). The story is divided into four parts and primarily revolves around the tales of Sara Doryeong (사라 도령) and Wanggang Ami (왕강 아미), who grew up in the two families of Kim Jeong-guk (김정국) and Im Jeong-guk (임정국). After their marriage, they receive a call from the deity but refuse due to Ami's pregnancy, ultimately leading Ami to decide to sell herself and the fetus into slavery. Later, Ami gives birth to a son, who is named Hallakgung. Hallakgung grows up facing various trials and eventually reunites with his father, Sara Doryeong, establishing himself as the deity of Seocheon.
In Popular Culture
Igong Bonpuri is primarily orally transmitted in Jeju Island and is usually performed as part of a shamanistic ritual known as Gut (굿). This myth is often sung during large-scale Guts held in Jeju Island, and as part of the Gut, a ritual called Igong Maji (이공 마지) is conducted. Igong Maji involves a shaman dressed as a farmer using a janggu (장구) to sing the myth.
