Origin & Background
The origin of Gunungsin (군웅신) is explored in 'Gunungbonpuri' (군웅본풀이). They are distinct from historical generals (e.g., Choi Young, Kim Yushin) and are not figures who were later deified. Gunungsin are true gods.
The Legend
Gunungsin is known as the god of war in Korean religion. In Korean mythology, there are several different Gunungsin, each with specific roles. For example, Sangsanbyeol Gunung (상산별 군웅) and Eoksanbyeol Gunung (억산별 군웅) are subordinate gods of the general Choi Young from the Goryeo Dynasty. Sanshin Gunung (산신 군웅) is the guardian of the mountain god, while Seongjoshin Gunung (성주신 군웅) is the guardian of the house god Seongju. Sasal Gunung (사살 군웅) is the Gunung that destroys evil spirits and is the guardian of soldiers whose names have been forgotten in history. Sasal means 'to kill with an arrow,' and they always carry bows and arrows. Dodang Gunung (도당 군웅) is the Gunung that protects the entire village, and Shiwang Gunung (시왕 군웅) defends the path for souls to the afterlife. Additionally, Sashin Gunung (사신 군웅) is the guardian of diplomats, assassins, and secret agents.
In Popular Culture
Gunungsin appears in many Gut (굿) or shamanistic rituals. In the rituals of the Seoul area, there is a phrase that mentions 'the Gunungsin who placed three thousand soldiers and five thousand warhorses on the road.' This shows that Koreans believed a Gunungsin commanded thousands of soldiers and horses. In the Gut of the Hwanghae-do region, shamans pretend to stab the enemy's neck with a sword while impersonating Gunungsin. In another Gut from the Gangwon-do region, shamans mimic Gunungsin by lifting heavy lead with their mouths to demonstrate Gunungsin's power. Koreans believed that Gunungsin was a very powerful and skilled swordsman. Gunungsin embodies the identity of ancestral gods, and in Gyeonggi-do, 'Lee clan Gunungsin' and 'Hong clan Gunungsin' are mentioned. These correspond to the respective surnames' Gunungsin. Gunungsin that protects ancestral gods (Josangshin) are also mentioned.
