Gangrim Doryeong (강림도령) or Gangrim Chasa (강림차사) is one of the grim reapers in Korean mythology who is responsible for guiding souls. He is considered the most famous grim reaper in Korea and is regarded as a representative figure of grim reapers. According to legend, he always carries the Jeokpaeji (적패지), which is a list made of red cloth with the names of the deceased written on it. Gangrim Doryeong first seeks permission from the village deity to guide the deceased, and after calling the names on the Jeokpaeji three times, the soul leaves the body and follows him.
In Popular Culture
Gangrim Doryeong appears in the Korean fantasy webtoon 'Along with the Gods' (신과 함께) and the films 'Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds' (신과 함께: 죄와 벌) and 'Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days' (신과 함께: 인과 연). Additionally, Gangrim Doryeong also appears in the Korean animation 'Ghost Messenger' (고스트 메신저).
