Origin & Background

Ravana was born between the sage Vishrava, a son of Brahma, and the demon queen Kaikashi during the Treta Yuga. He is said to have been born in the village of Vishrakh in Uttar Pradesh, India. Ravana's grandfather is the sage Pulastya, one of the ten Prajapati born from the mind of Brahma, and his maternal grandfather is the Rakshasa king Sumali.

The Legend

Ravana is the main antagonist in the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana, traditionally depicted as the ten-headed Rakshasa king of Lanka. He kidnapped Rama's wife Sita and took her to his kingdom of Lanka, where he imprisoned her in Ashoka Vatika. Rama, with the help of the monkey king Sugriva and his monkey army, launched a campaign to rescue Sita from Ravana in Lanka. Ravana was ultimately defeated, and Rama rescued his beloved wife Sita. His defeat is commemorated every year during the Hindu festival of Dussehra by burning large effigies of the ten-headed Ravana.

In Popular Culture

Ravana appears in various forms in modern popular culture. He is featured as a major antagonist in films and television series based on the Ramayana, including the 1938 film 'Bhakta Ravana' and its sequels, as well as the 2006-2008 television series 'Raavan'. The 2010 Tamil film 'Raavanan' and its Hindi version 'Raavan' tell the story from Ravana's perspective in a contemporary setting. Additionally, the novels 'Asura: Tale of the Vanquished' by author Anand Neelakantan and 'Raavan: Enemy of Aryavarta' by Amish Tripathi explore Ravana's life.
