Description

A demon from the folklore of India. Mṛtyu (Sanskrit: मृत्यु, romanized: Mṛtyu, lit. 'Death'), is a Sanskrit word meaning death.

Origin & Background

Mṛtyu is a Sanskrit word meaning 'death', derived from the Vedic mṛtyú and Avestan mərəθiiu, as well as Old Persian məršiyu, ultimately stemming from the Proto-Indo-European root *mer- ('to die'). This root is also related to the Ancient Greek μόρος and Latin mors.

The Legend

Mṛtyu is often personified as the deities Mara and Yama in Dharmic religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. Mara is known as the goddess of death in Hindu mythology, while in Buddhism, Mṛtyu-māra, meaning death, or Mara, personification of temptation, appears as a 'demon'. Yama is recognized as the god of death and the afterlife in both Hinduism and Buddhism.
