The Legend
Lempo is a demon that appears in Finnish folklore and mythology, associated with themes of love and fire. Lempo is sometimes understood as a male demon, but names like Lemmes, Lemmas, and Lemmätär carry feminine connotations. Christfried Ganander describes Lempo as an evil flying spirit and mentions it as a being that creates evil flying arrows. Additionally, Lempo is connected to fire, which has led to the theory that Lempo could have a role as the fire haltiya. Lempo has also been personified as a god of love, appearing in love magic under the name 'Lempi.'
In Popular Culture
After Christianity spread to Finland, Lempo's reputation deteriorated, and in folklore, Lempo is depicted as a capricious and dangerous spirit of love. Lempo helped the hero Väinämöinen to defeat his two demon companions, Hiisi and Paha. In Finnish, 'lempo' and 'hiisi' are also used as mild curses.
