Description

Giant brain-eating river goddess of Zulu legend

The Legend

Mamlambo is known as the 'goddess of the river' in South African and Zulu mythology, depicted as a large serpent-like creature. In 1997, newspapers in South Africa reported sightings of a 'giant reptile' monster near the Mzintlava River. Locals claimed that this creature was about 20 meters long, had the head of a horse, the lower body of a fish, short legs, and the neck of a snake, and emitted a green glow at night. Between January and April 1997, nine deaths were reported that were believed to be related to Mamlambo, with police explaining that the victims were in the water and that the soft parts of their heads and necks had been eaten by crabs. However, locals argued that this mutilation was due to Mamlambo's habit of eating faces and brains. For this reason, Mamlambo is often referred to as a 'brain vampire.'

In Popular Culture

An expedition to find Mamlambo was conducted on the SyFy show 'Destination Truth,' but no evidence of the creature's existence was found. Additionally, there is an episode of the Cartoon Network animated series 'Secret Saturdays' that features a monster inspired by Mamlambo.
