The Legend

Inkanyamba is a giant serpent from South African legend, said to have a body that stretches from the sky to the earth. It is considered the fundamental cause of tornadoes and is depicted as the goddess of storms, water, and hail in Zulu belief. Inkanyamba is not necessarily regarded as a singular female deity; in various stories, male Inkanyamba is said to cause disasters while searching for a female partner. Descriptions of Inkanyamba vary. According to a sighting in 1962, a creature with a horse-like head and a serpent-like body was basking in the sun on a sandbank of the Umkomazi River. Some describe it as having dorsal fins, wings, and horns in addition to a horse-like head. The Inkanyamba of Howick Falls is known in Zulu legend to be a creature with seven heads. According to a Zulu informant, Inkanyamba is a 'snake with two heads,' particularly hunting women and hiding in deep pools of rivers.
