Origin & Background
In Navajo culture, 'yee naaldlooshii' translates to 'it goes on four legs by that'. This is one of the various types of skinwalkers within Navajo belief, particularly a type of 'ánti'įhnii'. Navajo witches represent the opposite of Navajo cultural values, including skinwalkers. Traditional healers may learn about both good and evil magic to perform good works, but those who choose to become witches are considered corrupt.
The Legend
Animals associated with skinwalkers generally include trickster beings like coyotes, but may also include other creatures associated with death or bad omens. They can possess living animals or people and walk around in their bodies. Skinwalkers can be male or female. Stories about skinwalkers passed down among Navajo children may consist of tales that end in a complete life-and-death struggle between skinwalkers or Navajos killing each other, or stories of partial encounters that end in a stalemate.
