Origin & Background

Popobawa is a relatively recent legendary entity, with origins tracing back about 60 years. The first reported sighting began in 1965 on Pemba Island, shortly after a political revolution on the island. A more well-known sighting occurred in 1970, and it appeared periodically in the 1980s, peaking in 1995. It made brief appearances in 2000 and 2007, but was not seen for five years in between. The popular origin story of Popobawa is that in the 1970s, an angry sheikh unleashed a jinn to take revenge on his neighbors. However, the sheikh lost control of the jinn, which began to act in a demonic manner. Because Zanzibar's past is known for the Arab-run slave market, the story of Popobawa is sometimes interpreted as a social memory that evokes the horrors of slavery.

The Legend

Popobawa is known as an evil spirit or shetani, believed to have first appeared on Pemba Island in Tanzania. This entity is described as having the ability to transform into various forms, appearing as either a human or an animal. Popobawa primarily visits homes at night, but can also be sighted during the day. It is sometimes associated with a sulfur smell, though this is not always the case. Popobawa attacks people of all ages and genders, and after attacking all members of one household, it can move on to another house in the neighborhood. The attacks can consist of simple physical assaults or phenomena similar to poltergeists, with the most feared being sexual assault. Victims are forced to inform others that they have been attacked, and if they deny it, they face threats of a return visit from Popobawa.

Additionally, in the 4th episode of the podcast 'The Dollop,' Popobawa was discussed as an example of supernatural folklore and legend.
