Origin & Background

The legend of Koshchei began to appear in East Slavic traditional stories at least from the 18th century, and its origin is believed to be related to Khan Konchak, a leader of the Polovtsians (Kumans) in the 12th century. Konchak is described in Russian chronicles as a leader of the Polovtsians who returned from the steppes in Georgia (Caucasus) around 1126-1130 BC. Koshchei's love for gold may be a distorted record of Konchak's role as a resource manager. Koshchei's nickname 'the immortal being' seems to be related to Konchak's longevity.

Koshchei is a typical male villain in Russian folklore and mythology, known by the nickname 'the immortal' or 'the one who does not die.' The most common feature of the stories in which Koshchei appears is that there is magic that makes him impossible to kill. He hides his death within multiple layers of objects for protection; for example, his death may be hidden in an egg concealed within a needle, the egg inside a duck, the duck inside a rabbit, the rabbit inside a box, and the box buried on a distant mythical island called Buyan or chained. Generally, Koshchei appears as a malicious rival who steals or competes for the love of a male hero.
