Origin & Background

Chernobog (흑신) and Belobog (백신) are opposing deities considered part of the Polabian mythology. The earliest written record of Chernobog is found in the 12th century 'Chronicon Slavorum', where he is described as the god of misfortune worshipped by the Wagri and Obodrites. In contrast, Belobog is first mentioned in 16th-century literature as a counterpart to Chernobog. Scholars are divided on whether these two deities were part of Slavic folklore. Many believe that the names of these two gods are genuine, while others argue that they are fictional deities. However, both gods appear in subsequent materials, and Chernobog is sometimes associated with the Christian devil.

The Legend

Chernobog means 'black god' and is considered the god of misfortune and disaster. According to Helmold's 'Chronicon Slavorum', the Slavs mentioned the names of the two gods during festivals and feasts, believing that good fortune was determined by the good god and bad fortune by the bad god. They referred to the bad god as 'Diabol' or 'Zcerneboch', which means black god. Belobog is a contrasting entity to Chernobog, but there are no reliable sources regarding him.

In Popular Culture

Chernobog has appeared multiple times in modern popular culture. He appears as Chernabog in Disney's 'Fantasia', depicted as a giant winged demon. This character is also referred to as 'Satan' and appears in various Disney works thereafter. Additionally, in the video game 'Blood', Tchernobog appears as a major antagonist, and in 'Persona 3', he is one of the personas that can be used in battle. Chernobog is also depicted as the god of chaos and darkness in the Marvel Universe and appears as a villain in various literary works.
