The Legend
Mictlantecuhtli is known as the god of death and the king of Mictlan (Chikunaumictlan) in Aztec mythology. Mictlan is the lowest and northernmost region of the underworld. He is one of the major gods of the Aztecs and the most prominent among various gods of death and the underworld. Worship of Mictlantecuhtli was sometimes associated with ritualistic human sacrifice, and human flesh was consumed both inside and outside the temples. Mictlantecuhtli was also known by several names such as Ixpuztec, meaning 'broken face', Nextepehua, meaning 'the one who scatters ashes', and Tzontemoc, meaning 'the one who bows his head'.
In Popular Culture
Mictlantecuhtli appears in the animated film 'La Leyenda de las Momias' by Anima Studios, where he plays a role in resurrecting the dead in the city of Guanajuato. In the 2020 animated series 'Onyx Equinox', he appears as the main antagonist. He also appears in the second segment titled 'God of Death' of the 2023 horror anthology film 'V/H/S/85', where a Mexican news station discovers Mictlantecuhtli's underground temple while dealing with an earthquake and evacuating survivors, leading to a story where he possesses or kills most of the main characters.
