Description

우태(優台)는 백제 건국신화에 나오는 인물이다. 부여(扶餘)의 2대 국왕인 해부루(解扶婁)의 서손이다. 졸본(卒本) 사람인 연타발(延陀勃)의 딸 소서노(召西奴)와 결혼하여 비류(沸流)와 온조왕(溫祚王)을 낳았다고 한다.

Origin & Background

Wutae (우태) is a figure that appears in the founding legend of Baekje, said to be the illegitimate child or grandson of the Dongbuyeo king Haeburu (해부루).

The Legend

Wutae married the daughter of the Jolbon chieftain Yeontabal (연타발), Sosono (소서노), and they had the founders of Baekje, Biryu (비류) and Onjo (온조왕). After Wutae's death, Sosono married Jumong (주몽), a relative of Wutae.

Variants

In the Samguk Sagi (삼국사기) written by Kim Busik, two founding legends are presented, and it is mentioned that the authenticity of these stories is uncertain. The two legends have overlapping elements, but the fathers of Biryu and Onjo are different. Chinese records state that a figure named Gu Tae (구태) founded Baekje.
