Teojusin (터주신)
Description
The deity protecting the house site and its foundation. Venerated through a straw-covered jar (teoju-gari) placed in the backyard. Governs the safety and spiritual energy of the home grounds. Rituals must be performed when moving to a new house.
The Legend
The Tuhusin (터주신) is known as the guardian deity of the land where a house is built in Korean shamanistic beliefs. This deity is also known as the Jisin (지신) and is considered an important figure in Korean mythology. The Tuhusin is often represented in the form of a jar containing rice, peas, or red beans, which is buried or placed in the corner of the backyard or by the jangdokdae (장독대). The jar was covered with a conical umbrella made of rice straw, and the grains inside the jar were replaced every year. The family would make rice cakes (떡) from these grains, and since these rice cakes symbolize good fortune, they were not shared. The Tuhusin is sometimes regarded as a greedy deity.
