Origin & Background
Talhae (5 BC – 80 AD, reign 57–80) is the fourth king of Silla, also known by the title of Isagum, which refers to the early kings of Silla. His birth name is Seok Talhae (昔脫解). Talhae was born in a small kingdom located 1000 li northeast of Wa (倭) in Japan, and his father was King Hamdalpa, while his mother was a princess from Jeoknyeo-guk. Before being designated as the heir to the throne of Silla, Talhae experienced several legendary events.
The Legend
According to legend, Talhae arrived in Garak-guk by sea and demanded the throne from the king. The king refused, stating that he could not go against the will of heaven, but Talhae suggested a magical competition. The two transformed into a hawk and an eagle to compete, but ultimately, Talhae surrendered to the king and fled along the waterway. This incident emphasizes Talhae's magical abilities and highlights the legitimacy of his birth and succession to the throne.

Talhae was portrayed by Lee Pil-mo in the 2010 MBC TV drama 'Kim Su-ro, The Iron King'.
