Description

한국 설화에 등장하는 Deity. Sosamshin (Korean: 소삼신; lit. 'Birth Goddess of the Cow') is a Gashin, or household deity, in Korean

The Legend

Sosamsin (소삼신) is a deity in Korean mythology, a goddess who oversees the childbirth of cows. As her name suggests, Sosamsin is responsible for the childbirth of cows, which contrasts with Samsin, who governs human childbirth.

In Popular Culture

Sosamsin was primarily worshipped through gungeon (군건), which means worshipping a deity without specific rituals, respecting them only in one's heart. Sosamsin was properly worshipped only during the four days before and after the cow's childbirth. If a cow was pregnant, the family would hold a feast in the barn to pray to Sosamsin for assistance with the cow's delivery. At this time, clear water was offered to Sosamsin. When the cow was giving birth, steamed rice and other foods, as well as dirty water, were sacrificed to Sosamsin, and these offerings were fed to the cow. After childbirth, a rope tied in a knot on the left side was hung, with paper placed on top, and it was hung in the barn or at the door. For four days after childbirth, anyone who had seen a recently deceased person or spoken of death was prohibited from entering the house, as it was believed that if such a person entered, the mother cow would not care for her calf. If the calf behaved strangely, a shaman would chant spells.
