The Legend
Seolmundae Halmang is known as the goddess of creation in Jeju Island mythology and plays an important role in Jeju shamanism. Various stories about her have been passed down, many of which describe her as having created the diverse geological features of Jeju Island. Her legend encompasses elements of both mythology and folklore, and she is considered a being possessing both divine and human characteristics. According to the legend, she descended from the heavens to create Jeju, and it is said that she came to this land against the wishes of her parents. She is depicted as a gigantic being, and when she lay down using Hallasan, the main volcano of Jeju Island, as a pillow, it is said that her toes touched Gwantalseom. Additionally, it is said that the water where she stands does not rise above her knees. In some legends, it is also said that she married a male companion known as Seolmundae Hareubang, but this is likely a being created after her.
