The Legend

In Korean mythology, Samsin Jeseok (삼신제석) is known as the three gods responsible for the fate of families. They are believed to be deities created from the fusion of the Buddhist Indra and Korean shamanistic beliefs. Samsin Jeseok primarily oversees the life and blessings of descendants, and in the Jeolla region, they also embody the characteristics of ancestral and agricultural gods. According to tradition, Samsin Jeseok is born as the three sons of a noble maiden named Dangeum Aegi (단금애기). While her parents and brothers are away from home, a Buddhist monk visits her house. She offers rice as an offering, but the monk spills the rice to delay time, and Dangeum Aegi has to give him rice again. During this process, Dangeum Aegi becomes pregnant, and when her family returns, they attempt to kill her but fail. Later, Dangeum Aegi forms a family with the monk and gives birth to a son, who is deified as Samsin Jeseok.
