The Legend

Samseonghyeol is a historical site located on Jeju Island, and according to legend, it is said that three demigods emerged from the ground here to become the founders of the Tamun Kingdom. The legend states that there were initially no people in Tamun, and a special mountain called Hallasan existed. About 4,300 years ago, three gods appeared in a place called Mohung, located on the northern slope of Hallasan, and they were called Samseongin (삼신인) and came from Samseonghyeol. These gods were very large and tall, possessing an immortal appearance that could not be seen in human society. They wore leather clothes and lived a primitive hunting lifestyle. One day, while climbing Hallasan and looking towards the eastern sea, they discovered a wooden box sealed with purple soil that had been carried by the waves. They opened the box, and inside was a round, egg-shaped jade box and a lion dressed in purple clothing. When they opened the jade box, three maidens emerged, elegantly dressed in blue, and brought cows and grains from the coastal hills of Yeonhonpo. Accordingly, the three gods performed a ritual with great sincerity and declared that they would each marry one of the three princesses.
