Description

Origin & Background

The Samsung Myth originates from the Tamna Kingdom, which corresponds to present-day Jeju Island. This is distinct from the Dangun Myth of the Korean Peninsula. The Samsung Myth is documented in local historical texts such as Yeongjuji and Tamnaji, as well as in the Goryeosa from the Joseon Dynasty.

The Legend

According to the Samsung Myth, ancient Jeju Island was uninhabited. Three gods, namely Ryang-eul-na (량을나), Go-eul-na (고을나), and Bu-eul-na (부을나), appeared at Samsung-hyeol. They are considered the ancestors of the Jeju Island inhabitants. One day, while looking at Mount Tamna, they discovered a box from the East Sea. Inside the box were three beautiful princesses from Japan, along with livestock and seeds necessary for agriculture. These gods took the princesses as wives, planted the seeds, and began farming, establishing a village.
