Origin & Background

The Red Devils were established in December 1995 as the 'Daehanmin-guk Supporters Club'. The current name 'Red Devils' is said to have been created by international media when the South Korean youth team reached the semifinals of the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship. Because the official uniform color of the South Korean national team is red, international media referred to the South Korean U-20 team as 'Red Furies', which translates to '붉은 악마' in Korean. This name was chosen as the official name of the organization in 1997.

The Legend

The mascot of the Red Devils is Chiwoo Cheonwang (치우천왕; 蚩尤天王). Chiwoo Cheonwang is a legendary figure passed down in ancient Chinese and Korean history, and his brave stories have influenced Korean folklore, interpreted in various dokkaebi designs. Chiwoo Cheonwang is known as a symbol of victory and a guardian, making a symbol like the dokkaebi a fitting representation for the club.

In Popular Culture

The main activity of the Red Devils is to support the South Korean national football team. The cheering of the Red Devils is very organized and passionate, which is why they are called the '12th player' of the football team. The most common cheer is to clap five times along with the chant 'Dae~Hanmin-guk!'. Cheering takes place in stadiums, theaters, and public squares in front of large screens. The Red Devils usually sit behind the north goal in the stadium and form groups to attend overseas matches together.
