San-shin (산신) is the god of mountains in Korean shamanistic beliefs, regarded as a being that grants health, wealth, and the removal of diseases. The grandeur, mystery, and form of mountains are said to have inspired the worship of San-shin. In Korean Buddhism, San-shin is accepted as a guardian deity, and most Korean Buddhist temples have a building called San-shin-gak (산신각) dedicated to San-shin. San-shin is also enshrined in Samsung-gak (삼성각) along with Chilseong (칠성) and Doksung (독성).
In Popular Culture
San-shin-je (산신제) is a ritual to honor the local San-shin, held at the San-shin altar located on the mountain behind the village, between the 3rd day of the lunar month and Daeboreum (대보름). The costs are shared among the village residents, and those who preside over the rituals go through a period of purification. During the ceremony, the ritual officiant offers alcohol, the celebrant recites prayers, and the host prepares food. The next day, the village residents share the food and enjoy a festival with music.
