Origin & Background
The origin myth of the Myeongdu can be found in the Chogong Bonpuli, a major shamanistic narrative of Jeju religion. According to this narrative, the original Myeongdu was possessed by the three gods, the Myeongdu brothers, who first performed shamanic rituals. The stylistic features of the Myeongdu recall the miraculous conception and significant life events of these gods.
The Legend
The Myeongdu consists of three types of copper ritual tools that symbolize shamans in Korean shamanism in the southern part of Jeju Island. These include a pair of knives, a bell, and a divination tool, which are used in rituals to discern the will of the gods. The Myeongdu also embodies spirits known as 'Myeongdu ancestors,' who are believed to assist the current owner during rituals in accurately understanding the will of the gods.
