Korean folklore dates back thousands of years and consists of stories and customs derived from various origins such as Korean shamanism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and more recently, Christianity. Many folk traditions have developed in rural areas like villages, often related to family and agriculture, and play a role in strengthening the bonds of family and community. Folklore stories were passed down orally, but written records began to appear from the 5th century. Although many traditions have modernized or become less practiced, folklore remains deeply rooted in Korean society and influences various fields such as religion, storytelling, art, and customs.

Korean folklore includes various types such as Imuldam (이물담), which focuses on supernatural beings like monsters, dokkaebi (도깨비), and ghosts. The most common being is the gwishin (귀신), which is similar to gods, spirits, or ghosts. Dokkaebi is a legendary creature in Korea, sometimes considered 'Korean goblins.' However, this term differs from the European concept and does not possess malicious or demonic traits. Dokkaebi are beings that have the power to bring both joy and pain to people, often exhibiting friendly or bothersome behavior in their interactions with humans. The existence of such beings is believed to be related to the difficulties and joys of life.

Recent achievements in preserving Korean folklore include the 150-episode animated TV series 'Animetory Korean Folktales,' which conveys ancient stories through traditional 2D Korean-style animation. 'Eunbi and Gabi's Old Tales' is also a representative animation based on Korean folklore, adding explanatory characters to assist the animation process based on Korean folk literature. The film 'Along with the Gods: Sin and Punishment' is based on Korean folk religion and literature, depicting the journey of a person meeting a lawyer in the afterlife and undergoing seven trials. This film showcases the world of the afterlife as described in Korean shamanism and mudang (무가). With the original comic achieving great success, many Korean creators are showing interest in Korean folklore.
