Origin & Background

Korea's creation narrative is a part of Korean shamanistic mythology that tells the mythological origins of the universe. This narrative is broadly divided into two categories: one is the eight narratives of the Korean mainland recorded by scholars between the 1920s and 1980s, and the other is the Cheonjiwang (천지왕) bonpuli narrative from the southern part of Jeju Island, which exists in various versions and is still sung in the context of rituals today.

The Legend

Korea's creation narrative includes various mythical elements. For example, there is an episode where two gods compete to determine the ruler of the human world by growing flowers. The qualified good god grows a better flower, but while the other god is asleep, the dishonest god steals that flower, becoming the ruler of humans. In another episode, there originally exist two suns and two moons, creating a world that is unbearably hot during the day and unbearably cold at night, until one god destroys one of each.

Variants

The creation narratives of the Korean mainland are divided into four northern and three eastern variants, along with one from the central-western region. The Cheonjiwang (천지왕) bonpuli of Jeju Island exists in various versions and is still performed in the context of rituals today. The narratives from the mainland generally share similar content, but the eastern narratives are conveyed more succinctly. For example, in the eastern narrative, the purpose of the flower-growing competition is omitted, and it ends with the dishonest god learning how to spread Buddhist faith.

In Popular Culture

Korea's creation narrative is a genre of shamanistic narrative, sung by shamans during rituals. These narratives are traditionally taught line by line by skilled shamans to beginners, and they are still performed in the context of rituals in Jeju Island. In Jeju, the creation narrative is sung during large-scale rituals called daegut (대굿) and is also used in smaller rituals for specific gods.
