DeityKorea · East AsiaMythFear 2/10

Description

A shamanic deity who oversees childbirth and child-rearing alongside Samshin. Derived from the Buddhist deity Indra (Jeseokcheon), but transformed in Korean shamanism into a god of grain and fertility. Central figure of the Jeseok Bonpuri shamanic narrative.

The Legend

The Jeoseokshin (제석신) is a deity in shamanism that governs the fate of households, primarily overseeing the lifespan and fortune of descendants. Jeoseokshin is considered a deity formed by the combination of the Buddhist deity Indra (제석천) and Korean guardian spirit beliefs. In the Honam region, it also embodies characteristics of ancestor spirits and agricultural deities.

Variants

The name Jeoseok appears in all regions except for the eastern coast and Gyeongsang-do, where other names like 'Sejon' (세존) are used. Jeoseok is the Hanja transliteration of the Buddhist deity Indra, and Sejon is a title that elevates the Buddha, with the worship of Sejon being related to fertility and abundance.
