Origin & Background

Heungbu and Nolbu is a Korean tale written during the late Joseon period (1392–1897), and the author is unknown. This story is set about 200 years ago and has been passed down through generations. It is now known as a popular bedtime story for Korean children.

The Legend

Heungbu and Nolbu are brothers from a wealthy family. The elder brother Nolbu is greedy and cold-hearted, while the younger brother Heungbu is kind and empathetic. On the day their father passed away, he decided to divide his property between the two sons. However, Nolbu deceives Heungbu and his family to take all the wealth for himself, and Heungbu accepts a life of poverty. One autumn, Heungbu's family, having no food, goes to his brother's house to beg for food, but Nolbu's wife ignores him and acts violently. Heungbu endures this, treats an injured swallow, and the swallow brings Heungbu pumpkin seeds. When Heungbu plants the seeds, pumpkins grow, and he gains treasure. As this rumor spreads, Nolbu tries to imitate Heungbu's actions but ultimately faces disaster. In the end, Nolbu and his wife seek forgiveness from Heungbu and live happily together.

In Popular Culture

Heungbu and Nolbu is a story that challenges traditional values in Korea, particularly the notion that the eldest son is the most important. Recently, it has been included in the American textbooks 'Literary Place 2, 3'. This story has been adapted into novels, poems, songs, plays, musicals, traditional performing arts such as madangnori, and films, including a movie titled 'Heungbu: The Revolutionary' produced in 2018.
