The legend of Heo Hwang-ok is recorded in the currently lost 'Garakgukgi' and is mentioned in the 'Samguk Yusa'. According to the legend, Heo Hwang-ok was a princess of a kingdom called 'Ayuta'. 'Ayuta' is only referred to as a distant land, and its specific location is not known.
The Legend
Heo Hwang-ok (Heo Hwanghu) is a legendary queen mentioned in the 'Samguk Yusa'. She married King Suro of Gaya at the age of 16 and is said to have arrived by boat from the distant kingdom of Ayuta. She introduced herself to King Suro as 'Hwang-ok', and her family name was given as 'Heo' by King Suro.
In Popular Culture
Heo Hwang-ok was portrayed by Seo Ji-hye in the 2010 MBC drama 'Kim Suro', and in 2019, India and Korea agreed to issue a stamp commemorating Heo Hwang-ok together. Additionally, her legend is expected to be mentioned in the 2026 Netflix movie 'Made in Korea'.
