Origin & Background

Gut is a ritual performed in shamanistic beliefs, where a shaman offers sacrifices to the gods and prays for the fortunes and misfortunes of humans through dance and song. There are differing opinions among scholars regarding the meaning of gut; some interpret it as 'unraveling' misfortunes or bad things, while others consider it a derivative of Tungusic or Turkic languages, viewing it as an act performed in a shrine to hold a ceremony for fortune and fate.

The Legend

Gut is generally divided into three main types: ssikkum gut (also known as ogu gut), antek gut, and byeolshin gut. Ssikkum gut is a ritual that comforts the spirits of those who have drowned or died unexpectedly and guides them to a good place, which includes the Jino-gwi gut in Seoul and the Ogu gut performed in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsang-do regions. Antek gut is a ritual praying for peace throughout the year, while byeolshin gut is a ritual wishing for the prosperity and good harvest of the villagers.

Variants

Gut consists of two scenes: naesin and yusin, with a focus on yusin. Gut is centered around songs and dances, including special rhythmic songs known as muga. The ritual is conducted as a ceremony of shamans composed of deities such as Yangjae, Gibok, Saeshin, and Jeombok.

In Popular Culture

Types of gut include naerim gut, dodang gut, ssikkim gut, jaesugut, cheondojeyi, dari gut, maegut, madangbalji gut, Hahoe byeolshin gut, and baebaengi gut. Ssikkim gut is performed in Jeollanam-do as a lion's ceremony, while maegut is a farming ritual conducted on the night of the last day of the lunar year to drive away evil spirits and invite blessings for the new year. Hahoe byeolshin gut is a masked performance held after the village ritual in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, wishing for the residents to live without illness and in peace.
